Manage Anger for Better Relationships

Taming the Volcano: Reducing Rage, Drama and Emotional Escalation

In addition to offering anger management therapy, I wrote Taming the Volcano as a resource for anyone looking for a conflict resolution strategy that doesn't require another's cooperation or agreement. Rather, it focuses on building your resiliency and decision-making abilities in highly charged situations.

Taming the Volcano will help you understand the deeper reasons for your or other's escalations. By knowing the underlying origins of these behaviors (such as alcohol use, habits, and traumatic events), different response strategies can emerge*.

Untangle the confusion of how emotions, beliefs, and minor actions interact to drive seemingly uncontrollable, relationship-destructive behaviors.

What Listeners and Readers Have Said

Immediately I began to notice the difference in my reactions.

I appreciate how much information you offer. . .it gives me plenty to work with!

Your anger program is helping me change my reactions and I feel better about myself!

DEVELOPED from Experience

I began this work some 25 years ago while working with men who described stories of broken relationships, shame from a seemingly inability to change, and a sense of relief and amazement for those who started practicing new relationship skills (with a mix of grief that they had not learned them sooner). Through this experience I developed Taming the Volcano: An Eight Part Audio Series. Since then I have taught clients and colleagues de-escalation practices resulting in creating a safe space in highly charged situations.

Simply put, repeated promises to yourself and others, sheer willpower, or the best of intentions is not enough. Sections include the complexity of change, how a person's trauma history impacts reactivity, support for understanding and developing empathy (for self and others), how addictions and compulsions undermine relationships along with exercises and practices to further support and enhance your goals toward change.

FROM THE BOOK

"While emotional eruptions appear to be out of the blue, they occur because specific emotions are present. Even if you don't have a sense of clarity or understanding of where these behaviors originate or what do with them, they do have a source and can be changed."
